Anti-aging Mitochondrial Peptides Clinical use

Glutatión

Also known as: GSH, L-Glutatión, Gamma-Glu-Cys-Gly

Glutathione is a tripeptide (glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine) that is the body's main intracellular antioxidant. It participates in hepatic detoxification, defense against oxidative stress and recycling of other antioxidants. It is used intravenously, inhaled or orally (liposomal) in anti-aging, hepatic and dermatological contexts.

Mechanism of action

Glutathione acts as the cellular redox buffer.

  • Radical neutralization: donates electrons to neutralize peroxides and reactive oxygen species via glutathione peroxidase.
  • Detoxification: conjugates toxins and drugs (hepatic phase II) facilitating their elimination.
  • Antioxidant recycling: regenerates vitamins C and E to their active forms.

Uses & indications

  • Antioxidant support and hepatic detox.
  • Dermatology: skin-lightening effect (popular use, limited evidence).
  • Support in oxidative stress and neurodegenerative diseases (research).

Effects

Intended effects: reduced oxidative stress, hepatic support and skin lightening.

Adverse effects: generally well tolerated; the intravenous route may cause reactions, and prolonged skin lightening carries dermatological risks. Oral bioavailability of plain glutathione is low.

Considerations & contraindications

  • Intravenous "skin-lightening" dermatological use is not FDA-approved and has been linked to risks.
  • Better bioavailability with liposomal forms or precursors (NAC).
  • Consult a professional before intravenous use.

Regulatory approval

Available as a pharmaceutical/nutraceutical product in many countries (oral, inhaled, compounded IV). Aesthetic IV use is not FDA-approved.

Dosage

Doses vary widely by route and formulation. This is not a clinical recommendation.

Storage

Lyophilized/powder: cool dry place, protected from light. IV solution: refrigerate and use per label; glutathione oxidizes easily.
