Cerebrolysin

Also known as: Cerebrolisina, FPF-1070

Cerebrolysin is a mixture of low-molecular-weight peptides and free amino acids obtained from purified porcine brain tissue. It has neurotrophic activity similar to endogenous neuronal growth factors. It is used in several countries for stroke, dementias and traumatic brain injury.

Mechanism of action

Cerebrolysin mimics the action of neurotrophic factors.

  • Neurotrophic action: its peptide fractions reproduce effects of BDNF, GDNF and NGF, favoring neuronal survival.
  • Neuroplasticity: stimulates synapse formation and neuronal differentiation.
  • Neuroprotection: reduces excitotoxicity and free-radical damage.

Uses & indications

  • Ischemic stroke and neurological recovery.
  • Dementias (including Alzheimer's disease).
  • Traumatic brain injury and cognitive impairment.

Effects

Intended effects: cognitive improvement, functional recovery after brain damage and neuroprotection.

Adverse effects: generally mild: warmth sensation, dizziness, agitation or infusion-site reactions. Evidence on its efficacy is heterogeneous.

Considerations & contraindications

  • Approved in several countries (Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America); not FDA-approved.
  • Porcine origin: caution with allergies and religious considerations.
  • Administration usually IV/IM under supervision.

Regulatory approval

Approved and marketed in numerous countries for neurological conditions; not approved by the US FDA.

Dosage

Clinical administration in infusion courses under medical supervision. Self-administration is not appropriate.

Storage

Store per label (usually at controlled room temperature, protected from light). Do not freeze the ampoules.
